This short story is entitled (as the contest states):

Killing Me Softly

I drew a deep breath and held it, savoring the sweet flavour of the night air. It was a humble picturesque night, the moon was full and reflecting a brilliant light, glimmering off the dew that formed on the leaves. I lay down, and appreciated my surroundings, but a melancholic and persistent pull in my stomach reminded me of the reality that faced me.

My bottom lip trembled as a cool breeze tickled my face and left my hair in a windswept position; I huddled into a ball, wishing the night would end. I pulled my damp t-shirt over my chin, and looked at the soft brown dirt. I saw drops of moisture hit the dirt, what I was experiencing lept and bounded over what most people would consider an inconvenience.

It wasn't the location of it all that saddened me. It wasn't the event, I had gone through a mountain journey many a time before. But it was when I realised I would never again see her, my best friend, she fell off the peak a mile back. And there is only silence.

Another tear fell to the ground, and soon another followed, inducing an irresistible cascade that wet the once dry ground. I shivered. And I knew that it was not solely my isolation that was killing me softly.

=( Gosh... That's a real somber short story you have. But it's very decent.
